How We Support Patients and the Public

First of all, what do we mean when we say ‘patient’? In this context, CIHR has defined the term patient as an inclusive term for individuals with personal experience of a health issue, as well as informal caregivers, including family and friends.

NL SUPPORT works to improve outcomes for patients in our province by supporting research that has direct impacts on patient lives, in ways that are important to patients, by making them partners in research.

Please note NL SUPPORT is not able to influence a patient’s current care nor act as an advocate for an individual patient.

Patient-oriented research refers to a continuum of research that engages patients as partners, focusses on patient-identified priorities and improves patient outcomes. This research, conducted by multidisciplinary teams in partnership with relevant stakeholders, aims to apply the knowledge generated to improve health care systems and practices.
